Before the first frost

The winter checklist

  1. 01

    Lag exposed pipes

Insulate pipes in lofts, garages and on outside walls before the first frost.

    Shop lagging
  2. 02

    Bleed the radiators

Cold at the top means trapped air. Bleed each one, then re-check the boiler pressure.

  3. 03

    Check the boiler pressure

Your boiler's manual gives the right cold pressure — top up through the filling loop if it's dropped.

    Shop filling loops
  4. 04

    Protect the system water

Inhibitor and a magnetic filter keep sludge out of the pump, boiler and radiators.

    Shop inhibitor
  5. 05

Know where the stop tap is

If a pipe bursts, turning the water off quickly saves the ceiling below.

  6. 06

    Get the controls right

A programmable thermostat heats the house when you need it, not all day.

Burst pipe?

Do this first

  1. 1

    Turn off the water

Close the stop tap — usually under the kitchen sink or where the main comes in.

  2. 2

    Make it safe

Switch the boiler off. If water is near electrics, stay clear and switch off at the consumer unit only if it's safe.

  3. 3

    Drain down

Open the cold taps to empty the pipes and catch what you can with buckets and towels.

  4. 4

    Get it fixed

Pick up repair fittings from the counter — or book an emergency plumber.

Emergency call-outs are handled by our sister company, Capital Plumbing Group.
